Why Choose Dr. Scharf for Your Dental Implants?

Dr. Scharf photoOnce you have decided to have dental implants your next choice is deciding who to have place your implants. Sometimes the decision is easy. Your trusted family dentist refers you to Dr. Scharf. You know your dentist has never steered you wrong and you can rely on their years of knowing Dr. Scharf and seeing his work. You know that your dentist would never jeopardize their relationship with you by referring you someone that they do not have the utmost confidence in. You know your dentist has seen the work of many many implant surgeons and feels Dr. Scharf’s expertise is right for you.

Many of our patients are referred to our office by friends or family members that had treatment with Dr. Scharf. They experienced first hand the caring and expertise that went into their treatment and can recommend their friends and loved ones knowing they too will have the same great experience. Visits our patient letters section or video section to read or see and hear from actual patients what their experience was with Dr. Scharf.

Many of our patients come to us from the internet. We have found that they choose Dr. Scharf for a variety of reasons.

Many patients today realize that far too many general dentists are taking weekend courses and placing dental implants. While some general dentists have excellent implant training and place many implants, many do not. The frightening part is that under trained dentists don’t know what they don’t know. In fact, one major implant company recently abandoned its push to training general dentist to place dental implants after seeing the complications and failures that comes with placing delicate surgery in under trained hands.

Numerous studies have proven that in general, the more of a particular procedure a surgeon performs, the fewer complications he has. Even a well trained general dentist that may place 20-50 implants per year may have more complications than an implant surgeon like Dr. Scharf who places hundreds of implants per year. When patients realize that it costs no more to have the expertise of Dr. Scharf compared to a lesser trained and experienced dentist the decision is easy.

Some of the best results in implant dentistry comes from team concept. The implant team is usually made up of Dr. Scharf (the periodontist), the restorative dentist, and the dental laboratory. Dr. Scharf works closely with your dentist to plan the case and oversee its smooth completion. For patients without a restorative dentist Dr. Scharf can help you find an excellent one. Each practitioner beings their areas of expertise to bear on the case. This close collaboration in planning and completion of the case helps to enhance the final outcome. Each practitioner can keep up to date on the rapid advances in their area of expertise. When a patient chooses one dentist to plan the case alone, do the surgery alone, and restore the case alone they lose the benefit of the team. While many "super dentists" are able to keep up-to-date with the latest advances in both the surgical and restorative disciplines, many are not.

Some patients choose Dr. Scharf because of his academic affiliations. Dr. Scharf is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department on Periodontics and Implant Dentistry at New York University College of Dentistry. He has been teaching there since 1997. Dr. Scharf trains other dental specialists in the art and science of implant surgery. Having this academic exposure has several benefits to Dr. Scharf’s patients. First, nothing keeps someone on their toes like residents to train. They are always asking questions and their thirst for knowledge pushes their teachers to always stay current one step ahead. Secondly, doing surgery in an academic setting allows for the testing and evaluating of new procedures and materials. The ones that prove worthy are brought to Dr. Scharf’s private patients, the ones that are unworthy are discarded before coming to Babylon. Thirdly, being is an academic setting allows for continual exchange of ideas with colleagues. This enhances the care that every patient receives.

Dr. Scharf has published articles in such peer reviewed journals as The Journal of Periodontology, The International Journal of Periodontics and Restorative Dentistry, The International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Implants, and the Journal of The American Dental Association. Dr. Scharf has lectured extensively locally, nationally and internationally in Canada, India and Korea.

Some patients choose Dr. Scharf because he is a Board Certified Periodontist. In addition to 4 years of College and 4 years of Dental School, he has 2 additional years of training in the specialty of Periodontics. This makes him an expert in all phases of periodontal treatment including dental implant surgery. Anyone who completes the educational requirements can call themselves a Periodontist. Board certification involves rigorous written and oral examinations to assure the highest level of proficiency. While a non board Certified Periodontist may be excellent and offer the highest level of care, there has been no independent third party to evaluate the Periodontist and test him.

Despite all those qualification many patients choose Dr. Scharf because of his reputation for how he treats his patients. He is a kind and gentle soul who takes the time to listen to his patients. He treats each person as an individual as per their needs. Couple this with a staff that is dedicated to providing a warm, caring and comfortable environment and the combination is something special. We encourage you to visit our patient letters section to read some of the letters patients have written Dr. Scharf about their treatment. Some patients have even videotaped their experiences and we have those as well.
