First, nothing keeps someone on their toes like residents to train. They are always asking questions and their thirst for knowledge pushes their teachers to always stay current one step ahead. Secondly, doing surgery in an academic setting allows for the testing and evaluating of new procedures and materials. The ones that prove worthy are brought to Dr. Scharf’s private patients, the ones that are unworthy are discarded before coming to Babylon. Dr. Scharf has published articles in such peer reviewed journals as The Journal of Periodontology, The International Journal of Periodontics and Restorative Dentistry, The International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Implants, and the Journal of The American Dental Association. Dr. Scharf has lectured extensively locally, nationally and internationally in Canada, India and Korea.

Some patients choose Dr. Scharf because he is a Board Certified Periodontist. In addition to 4 years of College and 4 years of Dental School, he has 2 additional years of training in the specialty of Periodontics. This makes him an expert in all phases of periodontal treatment including dental implant surgery. Anyone who completes the educational requirements can call themselves a Periodontist. Board certification involves rigorous written and oral examinations to assure the highest level of proficiency. While a non board Certified Periodontist may be excellent and offer the highest level of care, there has been no independent third party to evaluate the Periodontist and test him.
