Why Choose Dr. Scharf for your Periodontal Needs?

In choosing a Periodontist why should you choose Dr. Scharf? Dr. Scharf was the first Periodontist on Long Island to be trained, licensed and certified in the LANAP procedure. He is also a Board Certified Periodontist. Anyone who completes the educational requirements can call themselves a Periodontist. Board certification involves rigorous written and oral examinations to assure the highest level of proficiency. While a non board Certified Periodontist may be excellent and offer the highest level of care, there has been no independent third party to evaluate the Periodontist and test him.

While completing his residency, Dr. Scharf was asked to join a group practice in general dentistry in Plainview, New York. He feels the years he spent practicing family dentistry have given him a unique perspective as a specialist working together with general dentists to provide the best care for his patients.

So rigorous is the Board Certification process is that only roughly 1/3 Periodontists ever reach this level of achievement.

Dr. Scharf returned to school full-time for specialty training in the field of Periodontics while continuing his general practice on a part-time basis. He was one of four dentists chosen out of over 200 applicants for the highly competitive position as a postdoctoral resident in Periodontics at New York University. He received exhaustive training and did extensive clinical research in the fields of both Periodontics and Implants. Dr. Scharf developed a new surgical technique for soft tissue ridge augmentation and his research has greatly simplified implant surgery. In May 1995 Dr. Scharf became a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. This was the culmination of years of preparation and involved both written and oral examinations. Nationwide about 30% of periodontists ever reach this level of achievement.

Dr. Scharf is a Volunteer Firefigher

Dr. Scharf holds the rank of Clinical Assistant Professor in Periodontics at New York University where he trained dental students in Periodontics. He held the position of Clinical Assistant Professor at the State University of New York at Stony Brook where he educated dentists training to be specialists in Periodontics. Dr. Scharf is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Implant Dentistry at New York University. He is responsible for providing advanced implant training to other dental specialists.

Dr. Scharf has given scientific presentations locally, nationally and internationally. He has lectured at the annual meeting of the Academy of Periodontology, and the Academy of Osseointegration in addition to local dental meetings. He has also given presentations in such locations as Vancouver, India and Korea.

Dr. Scharf has published articles in such peer reviewed journals as the Journal of the American Dental Association, the Journal of Periodontology, and Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Implants and the International Journal of Periodontics and Restorative Dentistry.

In addition, he is the founder and President of the Integrated Dental Group, an organization he created to further the continuing dental education of local dentists. Dr. Scharf is committed to continuing his own education. He is one of a handful of dentists in all of New York State with over 2000 hours of continuing education credits.

Dr Scharf also gives back to the community. In his spare time he is a volunteer fireman and emergency medical technician. To learn about what makes Dr. Scharf’s office unique click here .
