Hard Tissue Reconstruction
When teeth are lost and the sockets are not grafted at the time of extraction, or if someone has been wearing a removable denture for a long time, the bone can be deformed. This shrunken bone can make it impossible to place dental implants or have a natural looking tooth replacement. Dr. Scharf is an expert at bone regeneration. He can take a deficient area and using various bone materials or bone substitutes rebuild the lost bone structure.
Hard tissue reconstruction also includes regrowing the bone that has been lost due to periodontal disease. Here is a case treated by Dr. Scharf:
Bone Regeneration
This tooth has advanced bone loss. This appears on the x-ray as the dark area bordered by the yellow arrows. This tooth has a very poor prognosis without treatment.
Bone Grafting and Guided Tissue Regeneration was used to regenerate the bone that had been destroyed by periodontal disease. The new bone is outlined with yellow arrows. This tooth now has an excellent prognosis.
This case was done years ago using a surgical approach. Dr. Scharf now uses the laser for bone regrowth saving his patients the cut and stitch gum surgery that used to be needed for bone regeneration.
