IV Sedation Dentistry in Long Island
We all need regular dental treatment, but Dr. David Scharf and his attentive team understand that the anxiety some people have going to the dentist can make them deal with intense pain and the inability to fully use their mouths than come in for an appointment. IV sedation dentistry is one way to allow anxious patients relax enough to undergo dental procedures.
What is IV Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry is a way to get patients who are normally nervous about the dentist to relax during dental procedures. IV sedation utilizes a sedative drug that can have its level adjusted based on what the dentist is observing in the patient. Because the sedation process in intravenous and the drug is administered directly into the vein, the drug will take effect much quicker than with other ways of administration. These are the four sedation levels that we can use depending on the needs of the patient:
- Minimal Sedation: The patient is awake throughout the procedure, but is in a relaxed state.
- Moderate Sedation: The patient won’t remember most of the procedure and speech may be slurred; also known as conscious sedation.
- Deep Sedation: The patient is on the edge of consciousness, but is capable of being woken up if necessary.
- General Anesthesia: The patient is fully unconscious.
Is IV Sedation Right for You?
Dr. Scharf commonly recommends IV sedation dentistry for patients who have extreme anxiety at the dentist office or have to undergo a serious dental procedure. The reason most patients prefer IV sedation over other forms of sedation is that the sedation levels are more immediate and can be adjusted more easily; allowing for quicker changes in sedation levels. We have a trained dental anesthesiologist who administers sedation for each of our patients.
We also offer other choices for sedation if you prefer not to use the needle. We offer oral sedation as well as an innovative procedure called NuCalm, which helps you relax without the use of sedation drugs. When you come in, Dr. Scharf will be happy to discuss each option and help you decide which is right for you.
How is the Procedure Performed?
While Dr. Scharf concentrates on the specific dental procedure, our dental anesthesiologist will focus on your sedation. First, the IV is placed in your vein. Once in place, the sedation drug can be introduced before the procedure begins. Depending on the level of your anxiety or the nature of the procedure, the anesthesiologist can either place you into mild sedation or deep sedation. For the especially anxious patients, you will simply fall into a sleep state and when you wake up, the procedure will be done and over with.
