Oral Sedation Dentistry with Dr. David Scharf
Many patients are fearful or anxious about visiting their dentist. At Dr. Scharf's office in Long Island, we know how difficult this can be, and we're committed to doing whatever we can to ease this anxiety and get you the dental care you need to maintain strong teeth and gums. One of the ways we do this is by offering oral sedation dentistry.
What is Oral Sedation Dentistry?
Oral sedation dentistry involved providing patients with easy to swallow pills that allow them to relax and even forget that they're in a dental chair for the entire dental procedure. You'll remain awake the entire time, but you won't feel the worry or fear you typically would at the dentist. Dr. Scharf is trained and licensed by the State of New York to administer oral conscious sedation. Using this tool, he's been able to help many of his patients relax before, during, and after their dental work and have a much more positive experience.
Is Oral Sedation Dentistry Right for You?
Oral sedation dentistry is primarily designed for patients who suffer from anxiety and those who find it difficult to relax during long treatment sessions. Here are some of reasons many of our patients like oral sedation when they visit our office. If these effects sound appealing to you, let us know you'd be interested in oral concious sedation for your next appointment:
- Anxiety Disappears: As a result of oral sedation, your hypersensitivity will decline to the point where you're completely relaxed and barely aware of what the dentist is doing. Anxiety will seem to literally melt away.
- Safe to Use: Sedation medications have been properly used many times and the effects studies carefully. Dr. Scharf only uses medications that have been rated very safe on the therapeutic index. The effect will wear off gradually after the procedure so we often recommend patients get a ride from our office after we're done.
- It'll be Over Before You Know It: With oral sedation, most patients don't remember much about the procedure thanks to the "amnesic effect". You'll feel like hours are passing like minutes. Our sedation techniques give our patients peace of mind; you can be confident in your comfortableness.
- Easy administration: Sedation without the use of gas or needles further alleviates worry for many patients.
How is Oral Sedation Dentistry Performed?
Oral sedation is easily administered since it does not require an injection. Dr. Scharf will give you one pill to take the night before your appointment and another to take an hour before. This allows you to wake up and prepare for your dental visit without any pre-appointment jitters. When your dental work begins, you'll be able to respond to the dentist's requests, but you will feel calm and anxiety free. The effects of sedation will wear off soon after the visit, though we recommend arranging a ride home from our office.
